The concentration of tartrazine and brilliant blue FCF in Staminade
Aim
The aim of the present experiment was to determine the concentration of tartrazine and brilliant blue FCF in the prepared beverage based on the absorbance determined at the maximum wavelengths that are characteristic for each colorant and to evaluate the compliance of the analyzed beverage with the Australian standards regarding the concentration of dyes in foods and beverages.
Materials and Methods
The experiment was performed according to the laboratory manual instructions (RMIT). The present experiment was performed on a sample of Staminade.
Results
The characteristic peak for tartrazine was identified at a wavelength value of 413 nm. For this wavelength, an absorbance value of 1.059 was obtained…show more content… Discussion
The purpose of the present experiment was to evaluate the compliance of the analyzed product with the Australian Standard 1.3.1, which requires a maximum concentration of 70mg/L in beverages and 290mg/kg in foods (2003).
The results of the analysis suggest the fact that the liquid Staminade has colorant concentrations that exceed the limit proposed by the mentioned standard. The tartrazine concentration obtained during the tests was fifteen times higher than the maximum limit and the concentration of brilliant blue FCF was nine times higher than the
