Teenage wasteland by Donna Gaines is about how there are so many suburban kids today who commit suicide. She starts out by going to the “mostly white, mainly Christian town of Bergenfield” (Gaines 14). She is asked to look at a case where four teens committed suicide together. Once she gets there she is surprised at the lack of respect there is for these teenagers. She overhears people calling them “troubled”, “outcasts” and “burnouts”. She then starts to reflect on the idea of being a “burnout”. She says that it is something that you would never say to someones face because it is seen as an insult.
