Being friends with someone that is only looking out for themselves can ruin your life. In this book, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, is about what happen between Gene and Phineas at Devon private school one summer during the early years of War World 2. Gene was overtaken by jealously and guilt which he became self-absorb. Phineas was the only one out of their friendship that gave trust. Having a one-sided friendship does not work out like Gene and Phineas. Gene gets disappointed when Phineas do not get in trouble which was all the time. For an example, during the formal tea Phineas wore the Devon School tie as a belt which is against school dress code. The substitute Headmaster notice it and his “face was reaching a brilliant shade…” (20). Gene thought Phineas was going to get in trouble which made him “excited at that.” (20). Yet Phineas talk his way out of getting in trouble. Gene “felt a sudden stab of disappointment.” (21). Now why would you want your best friend to get in trouble? Gene is not an true friend.…show more content…
Those two places symbolize the most tragic events in Phineas life; honestly it was Gene fault that it happened. It started when Gene and Phineas created a group called “The Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session” which they both have to jump out of a tree into a lake. One night Phineas wanted to jump at the same time with Gene. Once they both go into the tree Gene “… knees bent and I jounced the limb.” (52). Right before Gene was thinking that he “... was not of the same quality as he.”(51). He could not stand this. Gene truly was not Phineas best friend because being jealous and having the intentions to push the out of trees is not what friends supposed to
