Stroop Experiment Lab Report

The aim of my experiment is to investigate the difference in reaction time of interfering colour stimuli upon reading names of colours serially and naming square patches of colour. 20 participants, evenly split between male and female will participate in both experiments. Participants for the first experiment are asked not to write down the word but the colour of the ink in which the word was written in. For the second experiment, participants are asked to write down the name of the colour that appear as square patches of colour. The independent variable was whether they saw the colour or the colour words. The dependent variable was the reaction time taken from when the word or colour appeared to when the participant started noting down their…show more content…
Ridley Stroop’s second experiment, (the effect of interfering word stimuli upon naming colours serially) participants were asked to name the colour of the appearing patches of colour. For this experiment, 100 students participated of which he majority were females. The experiment took place in a well-lit room and reaction times were measured using a stop watch. J. Ridley Stroop found that it took on average 75% longer to name the colour of the ink rather than naming squared patches of colour. Due to the constant exposure to reading words rather than naming colours, the interference between reading words and naming colours is weak. The aim of my replication of Stroop’s two experiments was to investigate the difference in reaction time of interfering colour stimuli upon reading names of colours serially and naming square patches of colour. My experiment is not an exact replicate of the original experiments, however, many characteristics of the procedure as well as the materials used in the experiment were the same. For example, Participants reaction time was measured using a stop watch, the experiment took place in a well-lit environment, and the repeated occurrence of words and colours was avoided. Due to my restriction of 20 participants, my results were not compatible with the original ones but the ideology behind the results is the
