Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 film, Spirited Away, tells a tale of a young girl named Chihiro who was hurled into a complicated spirit world. Throughout the film, Miyazaki draws thematic parallels to humanity and the current state of society by using motifs. Spirited Away emphasises how one can work towards their goals without selfishly ignoring the needs of others and find a place within society. This interpretation of the film let us see both sides of greed and selflessness and on society’s flaws. The primary focus is the scene where Chihiro sees No Face and feeds him the magical herbal cake, which No Face vomits out along with everything he has eaten. Visually, the film is very creative and the animation style is archaic. The bathhouse is unique and stunningly colorful inside and out while showing traditional Japanese style design. When Chihiro arrives to confront No Face, we get a centralized camera view to her as to show an arrival of a heroic figure. As she passes by a group of workers, they show a look of annoyance or jealously. As we previously, most- if not all, workers are greedy for the gold No Face makes; the gold is the sole reason as to why they continue to serve the very thing they fear. We get a view of the inside of the room No Face resides in, the camera pans the room showing all the food and mess No Face has made. At this point, No Face has consumed three workers, each with a greedy and selfish personality. A still shot of Chihiro facing No Face can be described as purity and selflessness versus greed and selfishness. After feeding No Face the herbal cake, No Face vomits out black goo, showing something is very wrong inside his body. We get a dramatic chase scene with fast moving backgrounds as Chihiro runs through the hallway. As No Face chases Chihiro, we can observe that he gradually decreases in size until he returns to his normal form. His anger calms down after vomiting out the two workers.
