The specificity theory of pain is one of the oldest theories of pain that explains how “specific pain receptors transmit signals to a "pain center" in the brain that produces the perception of pain” (University of Calgary, n.d., para. 2). Even though this theory of pain explains a lot about the biological responses to pain, it can take little account of how psychological factors affect our perception pain (University of Calgary, n.d., para. 2). For example, a person who has a major wound from abuse could report little pain because this type of environment is normal for that person and therefore they became used to the pain.
