Song of Solomon Paper Toni Morrison's novel takes a different but effective approach on the social problems of race and gender. Although Song of Solomon is about the life of Macon "Milkman" Dead III, a black man in the 1960s, the story is not directed at specific demographic. That is what makes Morrison's writing so powerful; everyone can relate to the struggles that the characters go through no matter the race or gender of the audience. Morrison evokes the same emotions from her audience regarding racism. Throughout the book Toni Morrison depicts racism in a different light than most African American authors do. Macon Dead Jr. is black but he sees the world as though he is a white man. After he acquires money and power Macon feels his family is superior to the other black families in the community. The way he rolls slowly in his green Packard through the "bad neighborhoods" shows that he tries to exalt himself. Toni Morrison shows that racism does not have to be a matter of black and white; it can also exist in a predominantly black environment. The main character, Milkman inherits his father's attitude and believes that racism against black people does not concern him. When he hears about Emmett Till he does not care because it has nothing to do with him even though he and Emmett are the same age.
