Why Is Soccer Not Popular in the U.S? Despite being the most popular sport in the world with more than 175 countries considering soccer as their national pastime, the U.S. is one of the few countries where soccer is not one of its top sports. Soccer is undoubtedly the world’s most popular sport in the world with over 30 billion of viewership all around the world (Bennett). So why is it that soccer is not among the top three most popular team sports in the United States? This could be answered by many people with varying answers, and no clear reason. Soccer’s popularity in the U.S could be due to the actual sport not catering to the U.S audience, not getting adequate media coverage like other sports, or due to it being a young sport in the U.S that has not had enough time to develop into the level that it is in other parts of the world. The popularity of soccer in the U.S may be attributed to the sport itself not catering to American culture in sports. There are several things about the sport that just does not attract Americans that are used to sports like football and basketball, one of those things is the infamous diving of soccer players in order to get a foul. Just recently MLS acquired a deal with NBC Sports for three years and $30 million dollars, it still pales in comparison to the 10-year $2 billion TV contract that the NHL acquired with NBC last year. The MLS has done its part by actively involving many local soccer leagues and according to NBC Sports, more than three million kids registered for soccer programs in 2011 (Hughes).
