Washington Irving was a very sophisticated person with a bundle of talents. “Irving was born in New York in 1783. He was the youngest of 11 children. His parents names where William Sr. and Sara. Irving was named after George Washington” (Biography). Irving was young but he accomplished many things because he had a mindset of achievement. “Irving achieved international fame for his works. He was also an ambassador in Spain around the 1840’s. He toured Europe from 1804-06. Then He went back to New York and practiced law but in fact he was not good at it”…show more content… “The headless horseman is the main character and he symbolizes the tension between reality and imagination, between the natural and supernatural” (litcharts). Throughout the story there is quite a bit of tension between reality and fiction. Some people in the story don’t even know how to decipher what is what. There are so many themes in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” one of the big themes is the supernatural. The whole story is about the supernatural. Supernatural is used throughout the whole text. If you look at it you can see that the whole story is. For example the “Headless Horseman”. He definitely is not human. He is also the main character so as soon as you start reading you see all the supernatural themes that are going to be involved in this text. The time period is a very crucial part of this story
