From reading the book, I believe the symbols play a big role. Although every symbol is important, the top 3 most important are, the “beast”, the conch and the signal fire. I think the beast is the most important because of the changes it made throughout the book. The beast starts as a figment of the boys imaginations. A little boy says, “A snake thing, ever so big, a beastie.” (Goulding 35) The boy’s now feared a mythical creature and gave Jack motivation to kill. The littluns are scared of their own nightmares, and it is easier to fear “something” than nothing. After a while, the littluns still feared a “beast”. Piggy says,”I know there isn't no beast—not with claws and all that I mean—but I know there isn't no fear either."(Goulding 85) He points out that the beast is just the fear of not knowing.…show more content… At first, everyone respects the conch, it kept them civilized. At the start,Ralph says, “We can use it to call the others. Have a meeting. (Goulding 16) The conch is also what got Ralph elected, "The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart" (Goulding 22) The conch not only represents civilization, but also power. We soon discover that the rules of power and power itself is fake. Rules are only powerful if people agree to them, this is why Ralph doesn’t want to blow the conch when he knows things are starting to break down. "If I blow the conch and they don't come back; then we've had it. We shan't keep the fire going. We'll be like animals. We'll never be rescued" (Goulding 92) because he doesn’t blow it, the power of the conch countiues. Finally the conch gets broken, Piggy and the conch both “die” at the same time.
