The morning was glorious! George Myers married for twelve years and father of three was on top of the world, and couldn’t help but smile each time he thought about her. Heather, ten years younger than him, beautiful, full of vitality and in love with him, this was the girl he wanted and deserved. He remembered their last stolen weekend together; he’d told his wife he had to go out of town for a conference, he didn’t tell her Heather would be accompanying him. George couldn’t believe his luck, and often asked his love Heather, “Are you real? He hoped what was contained in that envelope would change his life forever, and it would, just not in the way he thought. He felt good about what he was doing; he was finally getting what he deserved. He was thinking about Heather when he got back to his desk, she’d taken the day off, when his ringing phone broke the mood. “George, I just heard about the accident on the news,” Bunny, his wife of twelve years was so excited she could hardly get the words out. “What accident, what are you talking about.” He’d told her he didn’t want her calling him at work. He’d thought of her as cute, but that was before. George arrived home thinking of the unfairness of it all. George walked into his house, depositing his briefcase and jacket on the recliner in the den. Just like always, there was Bunny there to greet him. He could smell something cooking, could hear the T.V. and the kids playing. Dropping down on the couch, Bunny placed a drink in his hand and they sat, not speaking, just holding hands. When things seem too good to be true, they usually were but George thought he’s finally beaten the odds this time. George was spent a quiet weekend with his family, secretly mourning Heather’s death, when he suddenly remembered the letter he mailed that past Friday. How could he have been so stupid, and what the hell was he going to do. The moment Bunny opened that letter all hell would break loose. He didn’t know what time it would be delivered but he had to be there to retrieve it before it got to Bunny. Afraid he’d made a bigger mess of his life, George left work early Monday. His plan was to intercept the mailman before he got to his home. Luckily, Bunny was gone when he got there and the mail had been delivered. Everything was neatly stacked on the counter top, and all appeared to be unopened. Picking up the envelopes he hurriedly turned each over, searching for his letter.
