What Is Better First or Second? All people would argue that first is better than second; however, not in the case of the Second Continental Congress. The First Continental Congress issued a Declaration of Rights in 1774 affirming their loyalty to the British Crown but disputed the British Parliament’s right to tax it. The Second Continental Congress agreed that a continental army would be created to coordinate the military efforts of the Thirteen Colonies. The Second Continental Congress appointed General George Washington to be the supreme commander for the Continental Army. People from each of the Thirteen Colonies met in Philadelphia as the First Continental Congress to organize colonial resistance to parliament’s Coercive Acts. Congress was structured with equal participants and promotion of free debate, The First Continental issued a Declaration of Rights which affirmed their loyalty to the British Crown but disputed Parliament’s right to tax it. In 1774, the First Continental Congress adopted the Continental Association. The Continental Association was established to boycott British goods. “The colonist who refused to sign and agree to the association were ostracized and intimidate; some were tarred and feathered.”(Tindall and Emory Shi. Page 193 American: A Native Story.) Later on the First Continental Congress disbanded in October of 1774. In May 1775, with the Red Coats attacking Boston, the second continental congress met in Philadelphia. The congress agreed that a continental army would be created and George Washington would be the supreme commander. The second continental congress approved an Olive Branch Petition to King George 3rd which is a direct appeal. The American colonist pleaded with King George 3rd for a peaceful resolution and declared loyalty to the crown. The King did not take the plea and declared the colonists to be in a state of
