“Valley Forge: Would You Have Quit?” Being in the war would be hard in general but not being near family and the people you have grown up with would be even worse. But actually being in the war and living through those horrible conditions would be even worse. Not having the proper food to eat, having to drink bitter coffee if you want something other than water or even having to eat the same meals everyday. And that is not even the toughest part. The toughest parts would have to be not having the proper clothing on your back or shoes especially when fall starts coming next to that would have to be winter. Imagine being in the cold with no hats or sweaters, better that, shoes. Now we have the chance to go out and get yourself a nice sweater and some shoes, even new jeans and new shirts to cover ourselves up but having that chance taken away from us would be hard. In the Document B you could tell in the picture that most soldiers didn’t have proper shoes on and if they did then they were ripped and worn out, even then one soldier was missing a toe. Waldo has two pieces of writing coming from his journal. Stating of the sickness going around and how he would be “vomiting half the time” (Document C) and even how discontented he was. The food was poor like I stated earlier and the weather was horrible, the clothing was nasty, the smell was horrible because they were all gathered in the same room together. Imagine being in a small little hut that was barely stable filled with sick men. Some dieing and most throwing up, I really bet they were thankful for the men who weren’t sick but helping the sick. The journal also saying he was “smoak’d out my senses” (Document C) because of course the huts were not built well meaning they didn’t have a chimney or windows to get the smoke out from the fire, so they would just have to open a door to let the smoke out but even if they did that then they would lose the heat from
