The Spanish mission were a part of Spain’s attempt to control Texas. The Spanish crown looked at the Native American Indians as potential subjects, but they needed a plan to convert the non-Christian Native American Indians into Spanish, Catholic subjects. So, the Church founded missions for conversion and the military founded presidios for protection. With few native conversions to maintain a community and a French threat turned to no threat , the Spanish decided to relocate the East Texas Missions near the San Antonio River. Hunter-gatherer tribes near the San Antonio River have proved to be more receptive to the Spanish than the Indians in East Texas.
