Romeo and Juliet Outline I. Romeo and Juliet is a tale about a timeless but tragic love story that takes place in the 1300s even though Shakespeare wrote it in the 1500s. A. Romeo and Juliet meet and fall madly in love with each other but Juliet’s family does not approve of Romeo. B. Each of their families were rivals and had been feuding for centuries. C. Her family wants her to marry Count Paris, a wealthy and handsome kinsman but Juliet doesn’t want to marry him, she wants to marry her love Romeo. II. Shakespeare’s audiences already knew the story behind his tragic tale of love. A. Romeo and Juliet’s were known to Shakespeare as “star-crossed lovers” and their relationship was almost unreal and idealized because it was so passionate. A. Romeo was a very young man and was believed to be just a few years older than Juliet who was thirteen, almost fourteen. B. Arthur Brooke states in his prologue that Romeo and Juliet had to die because they went against the laws and married unwisely against her parents’ choice but, Shakespeare presents the couple as doomed to disaster by fate. IV. The phrase star-crossed comes from Shakespeare’s time which was around the 1500s which means that any two lovers whose love for eachother is doomed to disaster in the end. A. Many people then believed in astrology and thought that the course of their lives was decided by the hour, day, month, and year of their birth with the fact of the stars where they were born. B. Shakespeare himself did not fall for this belief. C. Julius Caesar was asked about age-old astrology and the impact of the stars in a later play and answered with this quote, “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings.” V. After Shakespeare admits in his prologue that Romeo and Juliet are star-crossed
