In the short story “Norma” by Sonia Sanchez, Sonia looks up to a girl, Norma. Norma is very intelligent, attractive, and popular. Norma helps Sonia throughout most of the year in their studies. Norma then lets down Sonia when an incident happens. Sonia looks up to Norma in many ways. She’s good looking, popular, and intelligent. Norma is her role model. Norma turned into a druggie, got pregnant, and was kicked out of high school. Sonia and Norma met in the future and agreed to meet again. Sonia then agreed to never agree again because she looked up to Norma and she disappointed her. Sonia’s algebra teacher, Mr. Castor, always confused her. The teacher got somewhat embarrassed because one of her students showed her up and told everyone to be quiet, including Norma. “I just wanted to talk to you in your own language so you wouldn’t be so lonely. You always look so lonely up there behind your desk. But screw you, you old bitch. You can go straight to hell for all I care. Hunchback and all.” Norma said to the French teacher. She was told to exit the class and everyone followed her. Stated before, everyone follows Norma for everything she does, even if it is rude and unnecessary. At lunch, someone announced that Norma was pregnant and was dismissed from school. When Sonia heard that, she remembered the once beautiful genius. Memories flooded into back into Sonia’s brain and she wondered what happened to Norma. Norma went from being the “IT” girl, to a dropout that is pregnant. Sonia later found out Norma did drugs. Sonia’s very disappointed in Norma because she went from the perfect role model to a teenage mom who did not finish school. Norma let her down. They ran into each other after college on 145th street and chatted. Norma and Sonia agreed to meet again. Sonia then agreed to never agree again because she looked up to Norma and she let her
