The lesson of “The Other Wes Moore” is that no matter where you come from, you can choose your fate. The entire story is about two people with similar backgrounds going in completely opposite directions in their lives. The author states, “The choices we make about the lives we live determine the kinds of legacies we leave” (Moore 185). The unsuccessful Wes Moore, left his inheritance that he tried to murder a police officer. Whether that is true or not, a reader knows that he made poor decisions prior that lead to his arrest. While the author, with almost being forced into military school, became a “Rhodes Scholar and combat veteran” (Moore 251). The entire novel is centered around the lesson he is teaching.
