A Listening Journey Through “A Good American” by Alex George I attended the presentation on Alex George’s book, “A Good American” last Sunday afternoon. I thought the content covered was really interesting, even though I haven’t read George’s book. Two of the pieces discussed really stood out to me including Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag and William “Blind” Boone’s Southern Rag Medley No. 2. To begin, I really liked Maple Leaf Rag composed by Scott Joplin. Joplin is considered to be one of the early pioneers of ragtime, and it is easy to see why; his compositions are truly astounding. In particular, Maple Leaf Rag has such a happy feel to it. It is much more “square” than Bolden’s music and follows a very classic form. I like how the sections
