Unlike today, women were not given a voice during the Renaissance. This didn’t stop them from making new accomplishments for the arts, literature, and way of ruling. Women went against the “rules” of a Renaissance women. A Renaissance women was defined as someone who stays home and takes care of the kids. Three women named Isabella d’Este, Queen Elizabeth 1, and Sofonisba Anguissola changed the image of a Renaissance women all across the country. They proved that women are important and can help extremly if they are given the chance. These women are just examples that show that women were important during the Renaissance. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth had a hard early life. Her father, King Henry the VIII, wanted a boy and the whole kingdom expected one. Her sister Mary or also known as “Bloody Mary” was very jealous of Elizabeth and caused her constant trouble until her death. Elizabeth was sent to a different household at a very young age with tutors to make sure she had a good education; only allowing her to see her parents on special occasions. During her life she survived a big scandal that included herself and Thomas Seymour, the husband of her stepmother Katherine Parr. Her childhood and early life would make her stronger which benefitted her when she became queen(B).Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth at 25 years old after her sister, Mary died on November 17,1558. Queen Elizabeth was a very gifted scholar and had the ability to speak several languages, Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, and Welsh(G). Her reign made an increase all around the world in literacy and the arts. In her era William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, and Sir Walter Raleigh emerged with great new advancements in the literacy and art world(B). She also adopted a modern religious policy and made Protestantism England’s religion. 1532 in Cremona, Italy. She was born into a wealthy family and was given a very good education in core subjects and in the arts. In 1546 Sofonisba and one of her sisters were sent to train with a prominent local painter named Bernardino Campi(H). During this period of her life she was given encouragement from Michelangelo; she was also given a painting by him to practice replicating(E). Also throughout this period, about 30 of the paintings she made including ones like Lucia and Minerva, survived into the 21st century. In 1559 her reputation really spread when she was invited to Madrid, to the court of Phillip II. Over the years she kept making paintings; like most female artists she tributed them to male artists from her period(H). A commentator named Giorgio Vasari talked about Sofonisba, “She had worked with deeper study and greater grace than any women of our times at problem of design, for not only has she learned to draw, paint, copy from nature, and reproduce the most skillfully works by other artists, but she has on her own painted some rare and beautiful things(H).” She was one of the first known female artists and one of the first female artists to establish an international reputation. She was one of the most accomplished painters of the Renaissance along the side of Leonardo Da Vinci and her idol, Michelangelo(E).
