Comparing Regular and Recycled Paper Towels for Strength and Absorbency There are many different brands of paper towels available to purchase in the marketplace. Many of these brands claim to be more absorbent or stronger than the other competitors. Paper towels, like other paper products, are made from wood fibers. Some are made with new materials taken directly from harvested trees which are processed into smaller fibers that can then be woven into the soft and absorbent material. However, some brands also have eco-friendly versions of their products that are made from recycled paper products and fibers. People have been recycling in the United States since the late 1700s, starting mostly by collecting scraps metals. However, as the county became increasingly concerned about the environment and the depletion of natural resources, recycling has become very popular (Nardo, 1992). Americans now recycle things like aluminum cans and other metals, as wells as glass, plastic, and paper. But paper and other packaging materials account for 35 to 40 percent of the household waste in North America. It is estimated that 50 percent of all paper ends up as garbage, and the average American consumes more than 700 pounds of paper every year (Rogers, 2005). The total amount of garbage generated annually by the U.S. consumer is around 420 million tons. When this amount is added to the amount of waste generated by agriculture, industry and mining, it is estimated that the U.S. produces more than four billion tons of garbage and waste products every year (Nardo,
