In “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, I believe that Jackson is trying to convey the message that people should question authority. In the story, the villages go along every year participating in the lottery because it is a tradition that has taken place for so long that it seems normal to them; no one bothers to question it. They go along with what whoever is in charge of the lottery at the time tells them to do with no questions asked. If the villagers would begin to question the lottery they would realize that what they are doing is inhumane.
