Queen Liliuokalani (September 2nd, 1838 – November 11th, 1917) was the last queen of Hawai’i (ha-vai-ee). Hawai’i is an archipelago in the Central Pacific Ocean. An archipelago is a group of islands. She was born Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻehaand and was crowned princess in 1877, when she was 39 years old, after her brother’s death. By the time she became Queen in 1891, a Hawaiian constitution had removed much of the monarchy’s powers. When Liliuokalani tried to reestablish these powers, a coup backed by the United States military overthrew her in 1893 and created a temporary government. In 1894, Hawai’i was declared a republic.
