Psychological researchers have defined hypnosis as a procedure that provides people specific suggestions in a trance state of altered consciousness. The technique has been used in a wide variety form of entertainment such as gimmickry. Yet, research now shows that hypnosis has a wide range of clinical applications. New information has come to light which suggests that hypnosis will become a valuable tool for medical practitioners because the science behind it has solidified it as a valid therapeutic technique. Clearly, new information on the subject shows that hypnosis can be useful for medical and psychological purposes. Laboratory and clinical research studies have been documented by known psychologists that portrays the effectiveness of hypnosis in terms of medical and psychological purposes. Hypnosis suggestions may replace the use anesthesia for people undergoing dental work, surgery or even childbirth. Hypnosis also enhances the effectiveness of therapies of treating medical and habit disorders such as anxiety and smoking respectively. Dissociation theory states that hypnotist’s suggestions are best responded by the subconscious part of the brain while the hidden part observer remains conscious yet not issuing a report. According to the sociocognitive approach, hypnosis responsiveness is based between the social influence of the hypnotist and the behaviour, view, and expectation of the subject about hypnosis. The sociocognitive theory addresses why some people are more responsive to hypnosis than others, and it justifies that the hidden observer comes about due to the hypnotist’s suggestions.
