The character I chose from As Good As It Gets is Simon. I believe Simon suffers from PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. According to the textbook, PTSD is a condition that may develop after exposure to a terrifying event. Some symptoms may include emotional numbness, sleeplessness, and problems concentrating. Depression is defined as “a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest”(mayoclinic.com 1). I chose Simon because he seems spunky, energetic and overall a good guy. I like how he shows the potential to find the positive in every situation. One example of why I believe Simon has PTSD is when he is robbed and mugged in his own house. This is an example of depression because he doesn’t want to do anything. According to nimh.nih.gov, symptoms of depression include “loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities”(1). His favorite hobby is to draw, so I was surprised when he stopped and then I realized he must have depression. Finally, I noticed that SImon also displays problems concentrating, a symptom of PTSD, when Jackie tries to explain to him that he is broke, he seems distant and struggles to pay attention, which is a telltale sign of depression. He has issues with focusing throughout the movie until he reaches his breakthrough moment. Simon’s breakthrough moment is when he sees Carol getting ready to take a shower. She is sitting down, and this is when Simon regains his artistic flow; he is inspired by her pose. He continues to draw pictures of Carol and is happy, and he no longer feels like he needs his parents help, even though he lost his apartment.
