In 1970, nine brave women formed the revolutionary “Virginia Slims” tour. The independent tour was unsanctioned by the United States Lawn Tennis Association and would lead to the suspension of all nine players from USLTA tournaments. The tour was organized by Billie Jean King to fight the inequality in prize money between men’s and women’s tournaments. The winner’s purse offered to women would often be as little and one quarter or one eighth of what the men received, even when competing at the same tournament. The “Virginia Slims” tour would offer a solution.
