I want all of you in this room, to go back and imagine as if you are your 10 year old self. Now, try to remember what your biggest fear was back then. That one fear that made your heart beat so fast you could feel it about to burst out of your chest. That one fear that made your body tremble uncontrollably to the point where you can’t take it anymore. That one fear that you are so scared of you’d lock yourself in a room and hope you’d never have to come out. It may be fear of death, wondering when death will call upon you, if you would go to heaven or hell, and if you’d still meet your relatives up there. But you might be forgetting that one thing that is just as important as the others: Emotional child abuse. Child abuse, in particular, emotional child abuse, is a highly undervalued issue in our society today that countless children suffer from. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, or NSPCC for short, defined emotional child abuse as “the ongoing emotional maltreatment of a child which can seriously damage a child’s emotional health and development.” Several examples of child abuse includes name calling, insulting, threatening violence, allowing children to witness the physical or emotional abuse of another, and allowing children to use illegal drugs. According to the NSPCC, a charity campaigning and working in child protection in the UK, emotional abuse is the 2nd most common reason for children needing protection from abuse in the UK, and nearly 20,000 children were identified as needing protection from emotional abuse in 2015. These appalling statistics report how significant this issue is in our world
