“HIT! HIT! HIT! PULL!” “SQUEEZE! STAY TIGHT!” “THROW IT!” There is a high guarantee that the person reading this essay does not understand what the above phrases are asking for. These are just a few examples of things that are yelled at cheer practice. Cheerleading… competitive or high school… cheering at games for football or basketball… it’s a sport whether society agrees or not. Since the time I took my step towards the competitive cheer world in 2009, New York State has been debating the ideas of cheerleading actually being a sport. Just recently New York State has declared that cheerleading IS a sport. What does it take for an activity to be a sport? Well dictionary.com says a sport is an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc. New York State was correct to look upon cheerleading as a sport because it is an athletic activity that requires skill or physical prowess and it is competitive. Cheerleader’s need mental, physical and emotional strength in order to be successful. In cheerleading you have to be able to hold yourself or someone else in the air or throw yourself backwards to do a flip. You have to have the endurance to finish a fast paced routine of stunting, tumbling, dance and a cheer in two minutes and thirty seconds. There is no time to get the points back like you could if you mess up in a football game, you have one shot to have everything perfect. If parts of the routine are not done right, there is a serious risk of injury. Cheerleading has the highest rate of tragic injuries of sixty six percent among ALL female athletes. Now since the training and practice is better, the injuries decrease but there is still a huge risk of something going
