Cheerleading today goes beyond the sidelines, including tumbling sequences, big ponytails, and glitter from bow to tow. Cheerleading is what many people just considered to be an "activity", but not anymore. Cheerleading today is one of the fastest growing so called "sport" in any woman or girl divisions. The over-all question that might pop up though, is "is that even a sport?" This debate has raised many eyebrows when people begin to dig into what these athletes actually do day in, and day out. Cheerleaders have fought for their voices to be heard, moreover the voices are beginning to break surface. The definition of sport tends to vary depending on personal belief. While being on a cheer team, many would say that cheerleading is a sport, and do not see the reason it would not be one. The International Cheer Union (ICU) was given permission by the International Olympic Committee to be called a sport in December of 2016 (Dosh, 2016). The ICU claims that within the next 10 years, Cheerleading will be a part of the Olympics in a competitive manner. Cheerleading today has expanded past just the football sidelines. Cheerleaders today require an immense amount of physical prowess and a durable skill set. Team members endure hours upon hours of practice, choreography and training. In competitions, cheerleaders are awarded with points for technique, difficulty, sharpness, and creativity. Cooperation and synchronization with over 16 girls and boys on a mat isn't as easy as it sounds.
