Personal Narrative: The Stereotypical Marching Band

This summer marked the beginning of my fourth season as a member and a leader of the Avon Marching Black and Gold. This is not the stereotypical marching band the average person thinks of. We are a family that prides ourselves on sweat, tears, and discipline. My first year in marching band taught me an array of important life lessons that I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise such as time management, social skills, and most importantly, learning that winning should never be my only driving force.
My freshman year I had the mindset that I needed to work my hardest so the band could win a State and National title. If every student didn’t put in their all, there would be no chance of winning. The seniors of the band constantly bantered the underclassmen saying it was our “duty” to work hard so we could be the champions. For six months I made sure to attend every practice, listen to every word given by the director, and make sure I could play every single note in the show. After we lost state to one of our biggest rivals, we were vengeful and ready to compete with…show more content… Although the band’s semi-finals run was rough, we refused to let that happen again during finals. We flipped the switch and gave this last performance our all. Everything about the show that night seemed to go right. The notes flowed out of the horns and the rhythms fired from the drums. The energy from each marcher bounced off one another until everyone on the field was connected on a level that I never thought possible. It was pure magic. The last cord echoed through the stadium and was accompanied by the hollers and whistles from the thousands of people in the stands. All of us ran off the field with tears streaming down our faces, hugging and jumping on each other. I was certain we had just taken what was rightfully ours—first place.
