Everyday we face the choice of letting our freak flag fly or complying to nonsense of society. In photo “Diogenes or Lucidity,” by Gilbert-Garcin, it shows Diogenes captivated in his personal desires because of his cynic belief that the entire world is shrouded with lies and dishonesty and the few honest non conformed men are isolated and need light to hold back the darkness; this is significant because conformity leads people astray and this lowers the reward of valuable citizen, depletes the logic of any man and dishonesty will run rampant and destroy the peace of the world. The lies of conformity cloaks everyone within it. The honest man will illuminate the darkness. Diogenes was often found with a lamp in the daytime and would say “I am looking for an honest man.” A lamp represents learning, wisdom, honesty and good. The day represents knowledge and opportunities and eradication of darkness. however the use of the lamp in the day has a reversed meaning even in the day with no sight of darkness you need additional light to illuminate the darkness of lies that cloud people. the light of the sun can not illuminate the darkness of conformity the only elixir to this darkness is the miracle of personal desires and the simplicity. Diogenes uses the lamp to help find honest men in a world masked by lies yet some mens lamp is a lie. how men show their personal desires and simplicity is an act of conformity. in a group setting men will conform to the standards of others and this maybe personal desires and simplicity but this is choosing to conform. in the photo Diogenes is isolated, meaning that an honest simple man without shame is scarce. however this scarcity drives Diogenes on by when he finds an honest man the reward of his personal desires and simplicity will be much greater than the reward of conforming and assimilation into society and become a “respected, valuable
