Personal Narrative: My Trip To The Medical Field

Upon entering the clinic, I appraised the vacant waiting room for a moment, save for a hefty police officer sitting in the corner of the room scrolling on his smartphone. There would be no intolerable five-hour wait time here. I trudged over to the front desk where a bleary-eyed young woman peered up at me incredulously. She indicated that I needed to fill out a short form with some basic information before I could be seen. I snatched a pen out of a small pot on the counter and walked over to one of the many empty black leather chairs lining the space. I stared at the blanks on the paper in my hands as if the requested information required me to deduce calculus derivatives. By this time, I felt like a tamping iron was being repeatedly hammered through my skull. It took me fifteen minutes to legibly transcribe straightforward information like my first and last name, address, and health insurance carrier. Once I had finished, I tottered back over to the lucky young lady operating the front office during the night shift. She glowered up at me once again, and without a word slid the clipboard over the counter and turned around. “So, should I sit back down then?” I…show more content…
“Well, I had an accident while I was rafting. I sort of got launched from the raft and hit my head on the rocks while we were going over some rapids,” I said with my head resting on the bed. She nodded and quickly wrote down what I had just said. “When did this happen? What kind of symptoms have you been experiencing?” she asked with her eyes still on my chart. I rattled off the laundry list of symptoms I had been experiencing since the accident including: headache, nausea, dizziness, irritability, and difficulty sleeping. Again, she nodded and wrote down the information I had just relayed to her. “When was the accident?” she asked for the second time, squinting up at me.
