Throughout my time in elementary, middle, and high school I have learned many valuable skills and lessons. I know the quadratic formula by heart; I know how to write a formal laboratory report; and, I even know how to tie my shoes. But what will make me a successful member of East Carolina University was not a lesson that I was taught directly. One problem with going to a college preparatory school is that there is always a focus on winning academic awards, even in lower and middle school. But in lower and middle school, I never won any awards, for anything – not even sports. While this should not have affected me, it did. As a result, most of my childhood and tween years I spent feeling like I was insignificant and not good at anything. Until my Algebra I teacher, Mrs. Taft, taught me a lesson that I will never forget.…show more content…
To my recollection, I had never even finished one of these drills or tests, until I took the Algebra I ACSI test that year. A few weeks later, I remember being called to the office to pick up my ribbon. While I was excited to have won something, I also knew that by being in the advanced math class, I was expected to have won a ribbon. Waiting at the end of line behind a bunch of chatty middle school girls, I was beginning to doubt that I had even actually even won anything. But, when I finally got to the window, I was handed not one, but two ribbons. The first was the one that most everyone else had won, but I had also received a ribbon for the highest cumulative score, something I definitely had not
