“Why would anyone use a big, ugly vegetable as a decoration? “my mom asked, wondering why we should waste money on a fake pumpkin. It was October and the traditional costume parade was coming up, but this year the school was also having a “Bring Your Jack O’ Lantern to School.” As an eager little fourth grader, I prepared my costume days before Halloween and pleaded my mom for a jack o’ lantern. My mom was a practical women, so when she heard what a jack o’ lantern was, she refused to buy me one. Days leading up to the costume parade, I persistently tried to convince her to buy a pumpkin. My parents were born in Vietnam and immigrated here, so I grew up with moon festivals and red envelopes, not Santa Claus and turkeys at Thanksgiving.
