As a Houston native attending Rice, I have taken full advantage of living so close to home: celebrating birthdays and major holidays with my family, inviting high school friends to campus when they are on break, and suggesting to my Rice friends fun things to do around Houston. The Global Urban Lab represents a new kind of opportunity: the opportunity to completely leave my comfort zone. I have spent my entire life living in Houston and I am ready for a new challenge. I want to shift from the connoisseur, with extensive knowledge of the sights and sounds of my city, to the tourist, admiring a new city for the first time.
