The PHQ-9 is a nine-question assessment tool use by healthcare professionals to assess patients with depression. The PHQ-9 has a sensitivity of 88% and a specificity of 88%. The internal consistency is high with a sound reliability and validity properties (American Psychological Association, 2015). I assessed Sally with the PHQ-9 upon her arrival at the Surprise Emergency Department. She scored 25 out of 27 showing severe risk for severe depression and suicidal ideation.
