As the growing need for medication management increases in children, occupational therapy practitioners play a critical role in promoting medication adherence. Medication adherence, the extent that a client's behaviors and actions are consistent with health care providers' recommendations, is influenced by copious factors such as family routines, knowledge, beliefs, stress, and children's behaviors. In order to promote health and well-being, occupational therapists need to generate an intervention plan collaboratively while taking considerations of various factors that might become a barrier to taking medicines. Following the doctor’s prescription is imperative to the welfare of an individual and it’s recommended that medication use should be embedded in daily or weekly routines to increase the likelihood of medication adherence. Occupational therapy practitioners work together with the client and client's family to embed medicine administration into current routines or develop new routines. In addition, cccupational therapists work together with family to address notable barriers such as medication refusal. Children might be afraid of choking, find the taste unpleasant, and/or have difficulty swallowing. In such occurrence, practitioners can work with families and pharmacists to identify appropriate preparation such as pills, liquid, chewable, and coating medications using FlavorRx. They can also decide on ways to administer the medicines and other things such as reward system to encourage consistency. In addition, occupational therapists assist with creating an optimal dosing schedule, promote good nutrition and positive body image, and develop other leisure interests to deal with the side effects of medication. One thing I learned from the article is that occupational therapy practitioners also work with pharmacists collaboratively to identify suitable preparation for medicines, such as the form and flavor. Although I was aware that occupational therapists work with other health professionals, I disregarded pharmacists. I thought that the primary health provider that diagnosed the client is in charge of the medicine and the person who prescribed the medications strictly deals anything related to the medications. Thus, I thought that occupational therapists have no say in anything related to medications and can only work around it during intervention. This information helped me realized that medicines play a crucial part in how occupational therapists should prepare for working with clients because occupational therapists should know some basic information about the medicines and the potential side effects of these medicines and plan accordingly.
