Poems, novels, and short stories all have ways of capturing a person’s attention with their mystery, humor, romance, and/or drama. Katherine Anne Porter is known for her short stories consisting of dark themes. Her stories discuss the origin of evil on humans. She is an award-winning author, and her books all contain death, guilt, and betrayal. Porter is especially known for her use of visibility, undependability, southern dialogue, and her personal life experiences to create her famous novel, Noon Wine. Noon Wine takes place in the 1890s. Her characters live on a small dairy farm in southern Texas, similar to where Porter grew up in Indian Creek, Texas. Noon Wine has six major characters. Royal needed work done around the farm but he would not do a woman’s chore. Olaf Eric Helton showed up one day looking for a job at the Thompson farm (192). Helton was a strange white man who does not talk or laugh. Royal needed the help, so he hires him. Quickly, Helton turns the farm into a money making business, and the Thompson family accepts Helton as part of their family under his terms (312). For a little while the Thompson family, and Helton, were happy, and the farm was magnificent until Homer T. Hatch shows up saying Helton is a crazy man, a murderer, and that he was there to arrest him. Royal is protective over Helton and orders Hatch away (313). One night, Royal has a dream of Hatch attempting to murder Helton with a knife. Royal then goes to find Hatch and ends up hitting him in the head with an axe (314). The guilt begins after Royal realizes what he has done. Although everybody stood by him, even the court when he is released without anything against him, he still felt guilty for murdering Hatch (350). The story ends with Royal putting a loaded gun up to his head, presumably ending his life
