“Nothing is ever done beautifully which is done in rivalship” (Ruskin). The love story of Romeo and Juliet has an extremely tragic ending. After Romeo is banished, Capulet begins to force Juliet to marry Paris. This results in a sudden chain of events. For example, Juliet approaches Friar Laurence for help to escape the marriage, all of these events ultimately cause the death of Romeo and Juliet. The rivalry between both families spawned Romeo and Juliet’s death, due to the effect on the characters involved, and also the chain of events which were caused by it. Foremost, the family feud caused Romeo and Juliet to hide their true emotions. This is shown when Juliet says, “My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! After Tybalt dies, Capulet feels the sudden urge to get Juliet to marry Paris. Capulet is extremely forceful, and is not being understanding of his daughters feelings, as he once was. This is shown when he says, “Wife, we scarce thought us blest That God had lent us but this only child, But now I see this one is one too much And that we have a curse in having her” (III, V, 164). Capulet’s actions are on account of the battle which occurs, and if this does not happen, Capulet will not be as forceful in getting Juliet to marry Paris, thus not causing Juliet having to fake her death which kills both Romeo and Juliet. If both Romeo and Juliet’s parents put their differences aside, and are less stubborn regarding the animosity between the two families, their children will be more comfortable being honest with them. Knowing that their families would never even try to accept their relationship, Romeo and Juliet are forced to take drastic measures, which ultimately backfire and result in the death of the young
