People communicate in several different ways, whether it be listening, verbal or nonverbal. Nonverbal communication is communicating without words, but with facial expressions, eye contact, body language, tone of voice and many other different ways. All of these nonverbal communications are used throughout the movie “Hitch.” In this paper I will focus more on the facial expression and eye contact that are present in the movie between Hitch and Sarah. Because of the facial expressions and eye contact provided throughout the movie, it is easy to understand Hitch and Sarah’s true emotions. On their second date, Hitch gets an allergic reaction to some sea food, and gets intoxicated off of benadryl. Both Hitch and Sarah end up going to Sarah’s house and talking about their lives. While focusing on their facial expressions and eye contact, it is easy to understand their true emotions throughout the scene. At first, Hitch seems to be very tired with a relaxed expression plastered on his face, and the fact that his eyes keep closing. When they first start talking, Sarah has a smile on her face throughout most of the conversation. It has been researched, that smiling is generally attributed to a positive emotion and behavior. A felt smile usually is accompanied by wrinkling around the eye, in order to be a positive effect (13). Once the conversation between Hitch and Sarah is steered to Sarah talking about her sister, her smile tends to fade away. When Sarah mentions her little sister, Hitch notices that Sarah breaks eye contact and is gazing off into the distance. This leaves Hitch to believe that she is in deep thought about something.
