Of the four listening models addressed in this week’s readings (see course content week two) which model (Lunsteen, SIER, HURIER, or Wolvin and Coakley’s) do you feel most accurately reflects the listening process and why? Be sure to include the model’s strengths and weaknesses. Of the four listening models addressed in this week’s readings, I feel that HURIER model most acutely reflects the listening process. The acronym HURIER stands for hearing, understanding, interpreting, evaluating, and remembering. This model takes both a systems approach and a behavioral approach to listening. I feel that that the HURIER model most accurately reflects the listening process because it focuses on the behavior and the skills individuals need to become…show more content…
Accounting for many of the variables that influence the listening process is a definite strength. The inclusion of remembering and responding is viewed as a necessary addition to the model (Wolvin, 1996). In contrast, the model also has several weaknesses. For example, the HURIER model neglects to include visual stimuli and only implies attention to the message. After you have the first three pages of the Listening, Understanding, and Misunderstanding link above. Provide a sound description of each of the five elements in Wolvin’s explanation of the listening process. Please include all five elements. Note how the more current explanation offered in the Listening, Understanding, and Misunderstanding article differs from the Wolvin- Coakley model in our online classroom readings. The listening process involves five key elements. According to Wolvin, these key elements involve receiving; attending; perceiving; interpreting; and responding. Which form of non listening are you most likely to use and why? Identify the contexts and relationships in which you are more likely to use this particular form of non listening. What can you do to address this problem? The form of non listening I am most likely to use is selective listening. According to our readings, selective listening acknowledges only the portion of a message that interests them and they simply ignore the rest. It is easy to see why selective listening stops the listener from understanding the meaning that the sender is trying to convey. I am most likely to use this particular form of non listening in many of my relationships. I find myself often times only focusing on the interesting part of what the speaker is saying. For example, often times when I was younger, my mother would tell me to do several tasks and I would only do about half of those
