The Dangers Shown in a Flashback in Chapter 2
In Men in the Sun, a book written by Ghassan Kanafani, 3 men are traveling to Kuwait to pursue a better life. One of these men, Assad who had been previously smuggled into Iraq is trying to get smuggled to Kuwait. In chapter 2, while Assad is talking to the smuggler, he has a series of flashbacks that show what happened when he was first smuggled into Kuwait. Many of these flashbacks described the dangers of being smuggled and how it could effect a person. One flashback that describes some dangers is when Assad crosses H4, a pumping station, and is met by a couple on the other side instead of his guide. This specific flashback describes three main dangers that the men may face as they attempt to…show more content… The first danger, the danger of abandonment, shows that the men may be left stranded alone to go to Kuwait with no help and no guide. This means that the guide had tricked them, and took all their money without fulfilling the duty of being a guide to the men. Assad got lucky when he was abandoned by Abdul-Abd, his smuggler and guide. He was met by tourists who might have saved him from having an illness because of dehydration or the heat, might have even saved him from death. However, this time, the men might not be as lucky as Assad was the first time he was smuggled so they might die because of not receiving any help. This leads to the second danger, the danger of death. Many people might not be able to survive without a guide’s help or might not survive even with a guide’s help. The flashback shows that although Assad was a healthy man, he was on the verge of fainting when he was walking under the harsh sun. This shows that weaker men or less healthy men might not survive the six or seven long hour walk that they would have to make during their journey, as the new smuggler had told Assad.
