Neonatal Hypoglycemia

Find the Evidence: Neonatal Hypoglycemia The term “hypoglycemia” refers to a physiological phenomenon “present when glucose delivery is inadequate to meet glucose demand” (McGowan, 1999, p. e8). In neonates, the exact serum glucose concentration on which the diagnosis should be made is highly controversial as the neonatal supply and demand for glucose can vary based on their unique status. With the lack of specific blood glucose parameters to diagnose neonatal hypoglycemia, it became clear that the topic itself is a grey area requiring further research. Through this gap in information and a research article by Youngwanichsetha and Phumdoung (2014), the following PICO question was developed: In postpartum women with a history of gestational…show more content…
There, “Neonatal Hypoglycemia” was typed into the search box and “AB Abstract” was selected on the drop-down box to its right. This basic search yielded 40 articles that contained the term “Neonatal Hypoglycemia” in their abstracts. The next step of the literature search entailed analyzing the “Detailed Record” pages of several articles. The “Detailed Record” of the selected article provided information on the author, publication type, major/minor subjects and journal subsets. With an understanding of the terms commonly used in the preceding categories, the following step was to refine the literature…show more content…
Not only does this action allow the researcher to find articles that more closely reflect their aim but also helps in reducing the vast amount of articles provided into a manageable and focused amount. In the refined search, Nursing was added as journal subset to yield articles that contained at least one nurse as an author. In addition, the “Full text” box was selected to produce a search containing only the articles that contained the full text available. The publication date was changed to reflect only those articles that were written since 2011 or sooner to maintain relevance to today’s advances. Also, the publication type was selected as a research article. With all of the previous fields in the refined search submitted, only two results were produced and after careful evaluation, deemed inadequate. Following this unsuccessful search, the next step was to verify the spelling of the search terms in addition to searching in the previous “Detailed Records” from the results of the unrefined search for alternate major subject terms. Through this investigation, it was discovered that hypoglycemia can also be spelled as “hypoglycaemia”. The original search term was then changed to “Neonatal Hypoglycaemia” while maintaining all other search criteria and four articles were yielded. Once a brief evaluation of all four articles was performed, the second article by Youngwanichsetha and Phumdoung was
