Neil Armstrong was the first ever human to go to the moon. This was huge to America and the rest of the world in 1969 (www.space.com), and still is to this day. Neil became an astronaut in 1962. He was on the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 with two others. Neil said his famous words ‘That is one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind’ on July 20, 1969 after taking the first steps on the moon on the Apollo 11 mission. Being the first person on the moon changed history greatly, since it changed how the world saw space exploration. Before becoming an astronaut, Neil was an engineer, a pilot, and a college professor. He had always been interested in flying ever since he went on his first plane ride when he was around the age of five. After he became an astronaut, Neil was the commander of Gemini eight in 1966(www.nasa.gov). He was also the commander of the Apollo 11 in 1969 and the name of the spaceship was Eagle. He flew more than 200 aircraft models in his lifetime. Neil Armstrong is probably the most famous astronaut in history.…show more content…
Neil and Buzz both walked on the moon while Michael had to take care of the ship. The two men explored the surface of the moon for around two and a half hours, taking pictures and samples. When they were about to leave, they placed an American flag on the surface of the moon in honor for those who’ve fallen during the Apollo one mission. Also, they put a plaque on one of the Eagles’ legs for those to see that may come after them. On it, it said ‘Here men from the planet Earth first stepped foot upon the Moon July 1969 A.D.
