After watching Mulholland Dr. for the first time, I was speechless. At first I got angry, but after a while I started to suspect that Mulholland Dr. is a masterpiece that needs to be analyzed in extraordinary detail. By the help of my thesis I will try to place the first piece of a jigsaw puzzle that is this film: How is David Lynches’ representation of Hollywood in the film Mulholland Dr.? After this task I will hopefully be one step closer of interpreting this riddle. Mulholland Dr. is written and directed by the Academy Award nominee Mr. David Lynch. David Lynch is famous for his surreal and, in many cases, violent touch within his films. Mulholland Dr. is set in Los Angeles Hollywood, where 2 characters are central, Betty Elms / Diane Selwyn and Rita / Camilla Rhodes. The film is a story about a woman named Diane Selwyn who is experiencing an extreme mental and emotional breakdown. The cause of her conditions is guilt over a horrible incident she recently had set in motion. Diane is a Hollywood wannabe who fell in love with another actor Camilla. After the two of them become involved with one another, Diane got humiliated and jealous at some point. She then hires a hit man to murder Camilla. The first three quarters of the…show more content…
During the movie we are presented with some shady characters that we do not learn so much about. Mr. Rouque, the Castigliane brothers and their agent the cowboy is these mysterious men that we meet in the film. After I watched the film I did not think that these roles were that important, but after some brainstorming I got to the conclusion that these men are the puppeteers of Hollywood. They control who gets which parts in different movies, as presented in this single line: “This is the girl”. By the way these characters act and how everyone respects and fears them, there is only one logical answer... these men are part of an organized crime family of some sort and Mr. Rouque is the mob king
