Motion sickness is highly prevalent, and a significant number of people are highly at risk for developing motion sickness and are already having motion sickness . Motion sickness is eminently stressful and is a preventive problem. The mechanism is still not understood clearly though there are many theories and hypotheses stated. The objective of our research conducted under the supervision of GMU public health and community medicine department is mainly to assess the prevalence of motion sickness among GMU students and hence determine the knowledge of GMU students about motion sickness, the factors related to motion sickness such as demographics, health factors, psychosocial factors, genetic factors, actors that induce motion sickness and factors…show more content…
Motion sickness is characterized by patterns of perceptual stimulation that differ from patterns expected on the basis of past experience[3]. The brain receives numerous inputs from inner ears, eyes, skin and muscles that are used to estimate the motion and spatial orientation of the head. The eyes tell whether motion is happening, the proprioceptive system and the vestibular system helps in sensing motion. The body integrates visual inputs, vestibular input from semicircular canals (for which the primary stimulus is angular acceleration) and otolith apparatus (for which the primary stimulus is linear acceleration) and proprioceptive system and compares it to a neural store of past experience, if there is a sensory conflict or a neural mismatch it results in giving rise to symptoms of motion sickness[4]. The neural mismatch theory also explains a reversed type of sensory conflict seen when the body is still but the visual field shows significant…show more content…
The symptoms usually are a general feeling of illness, nausea, vomiting, headache, cold sweating, pallor and malaise. There are a few non pharmacological interventions which can prevent motion sickness like avoiding situations that trigger motion sickness, optimizing position to reduce motion or motion perception, lying prone, shutting eyes, looking at the horizon, adding distractions, avoiding reading or watching videos in a moving vehicle, proper ventilation i.e. open a window to let fresh air in and avoiding drink or smoke before
