Peter Cave’s “Man or Sheep” speaks on how many people in the overall population act like sheep and less like men who follow their own ideals. Hence, a major issue that Cave marvels is on whether people should or should not obey their government. Cave argues that there are people who are against the authorities but choose to obey simply because of fear. In an idyllic functional system we might find ourselves ethically obligated because a reasonable state maximizes service to its people. Each of us has a moral duty to do what best supports the public. However, as stated by Walter E. Williams, “Morality can be a contentious issue but there are some broad guides for deciding what laws and government actions have moral sanction.” (“Should Laws Be Obeyed?” 3). There is a difference between a moral obligation and what you are legally required to do. In a morally unjust legal system, you may find yourself being reprimanded for doing what is morally right, but that does not mean that you should not do the right thing.
