The Florida Department of Corrections website states that its mission is: “Community Corrections’ primary function and mission is to protect the community by supervising offenders and reporting non-compliance to the sentencing or releasing authority.” The focus and goal of this state’s community corrections program is to watch offenders who have been placed on probation and make sure that they do not break any of the rules set forth in their probation. They also want to make sure that the offenders who have been given a sentence to serve in the community do not harm citizens in the community. The community as a whole is supposed to supervise the offender as well as the probation officer, reporting problems to higher authorities. The website talks…show more content…
The focus is placed on making sure that those who are under community corrections supervision are always watched and punished if they step out of line. This mission statement has a very strong emphasis on making sure that the offender is punished and does not break any of the rules of his or her sentence. It does not take into account habilitating or rehabilitating offenders. It is only focused on the offender receiving his or her punishment. I do not think that this approach to community corrections is very effective or meaningful. Many people who are placed on probation or parole do not have critical thinking skills, if offenders had the ability to refine their critical thinking skills, their chances of re-offending would go down. In this mission statement the community and supervising officer are supposed to tell on the offender when they break rules, but are not required to make efforts to help the offender become (re)habilitated. It does not make sense for us to only punish offenders, but not explain the other legal opportunities out there for solving their
