Chapter 1: Introduction 1.6 1.1 Introduction The Mauritian banking industry comprises of 21 banks, of which 6 local banks, 10 foreign-owned subsidiaries, 1 is a joint venture and 4 are branches of foreign banks. All the banks are licensed by the Bank of Mauritius to carry out banking business locally and internationally. The wide range of services provided characterizes the banking industry. Besides traditional banking facilities, banks offer card-based payment services, such as credit and debit cards internet banking and phone banking facilities. They establish 'La Banque Commerciale de Maurice' which starts business on 1 September 1838 in premises situated at the Rue de Paris (now Sir Seewoosagur Street) in the capital, Port Louis. In 1839, Queen Victoria grants a Royal Charter to the newly established bank for a period of twenty years under the name of 'The Mauritius Commercial Bank' (MCB). The charter is renewed every twenty years until 18 August 1955 when the Bank becomes a limited liability company. The MCB has always been the favorite bank of Mauritians and has greatly contributed in the economy of the island. Due to its actual problem, it is crystal clear that if this continues more customers will start looking to receive service form other banks. This will cause the profit of the company to decrease significantly. This will result in providing a weakness in the banking sector as a whole which might give rise to problems including bank runs problems as people will start losing confidence in the overall banking system. 1.8 Format of study Chapter 1- Introduction This chapter consists of the background of the study, problem statement, aim of study, objective of study and conclusion. Chapter 2- Literature Review This chapter reviewed the literature in the field of service quality Chapter 3- Research Methodology This chapter consists of the methodology that had been used to conduct this study, with full explanation of the research process, method, approach and design. Chapter 4- Research Result This chapter consists of the presentation and discussion of an analysis of the result obtained from the quantitative data. Chapter 5- Conclusion and Recommendations This chapter concluded this study and consisted of a summary of the research, the recommendations, suggestions for future research and conclusion. 1.9
