In August 1963, more than 51 years ago, Martin Luther King inspired America with his historical ‘I Have A Dream’ speech, intensely delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The “I have a dream” speech by Martin Luther King is recognized as one of the best speeches ever given. His soaring rhetoric demanding an integrated society and racial justice became a rallying cry for the black community and has endured for generations of Americans. His words proved to be a benchmark for understanding the social and political disturbance and gave the nation the language to express what was happening. You can improve the credibility of your arguments by referring to the appropriate phrase/quotes of credible speakers and writers in your speech. Let’s take a look at the allusions used by Martin Luther King Jr.:  “Five score years ago…” this refers to Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address speech which began “Four score and seven years ago…” This allusion is particularly touching given that King was speaking in front of the Lincoln Memorial.  “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” is a reference to the United States Declaration of Independence.  Numerous Biblical allusions provide the moral basis for King’s arguments:  “It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity” alludes to Psalms 30:5 “For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime.
