The Reformation The Reformation, also known as The Protestant Reformation, was a religious movement that took place in 16th century Europe. At the time, the Church (now called the Roman Catholic Church), had dominated most of European civilization. The Church was backed by the Holy Roman Empire and thus, was very powerful but also involved corruption. There had been many attempts to address the corruption in the Church but none have proved successful until Martin Luther’s efforts in the early 1500s. At age 21, Luther abandoned his studies at law school to become a monk. As a monk, he is concerned about his personal purity while trying to understand his relationship with God.
